Improved mechanical resistance to wear is a key requirement of a wide range of products. From coatings to clothing, leather to upholstery, keypads to plastic toys, a product’s ability to resist wear is an important characteristic. There are testing methods relating to the ‘abrasion by friction’ concept. Others are based on the projection of abrasive particles on to the test specimen. These techniques provide valuable information about materials and processes.

Keystone Compliance
Ingress protection testing tests the level of protection an enclosure provides against intrusions. Two such sets of ingress protection tests involve exposing the equipment under test (EUT), to spraying water and splashing water. These tests are numbered IPX3 and IPX4. The first digit, represented by the “X”, ranges from 0 to 6 and specifies the protection from solid particles. The second digit, in the case of spraying water, would always be a 3, and in the case of splashing water, would always be a 4.

Keystone Compliance
Ingress protection testing tests the level of protection an enclosure provides against intrusions. One such set of ingress protection tests involves exposing the equipment under test (EUT), to high-pressure and high-temperature water jets. These tests are numbered IPX9. The first digit, represented by the “X”, ranges from 0 to 6 and specifies the protection from solid particles. The second digit, in the case of the high-pressure and high temperature water jets ingress protection test, would always be a 9.

Keystone Compliance
Ingress protection testing tests the level of protection an enclosure provides against intrusions. Intrusions can be defined as body parts, water, dust and other foreign objects. The IP Code, also known as the International Protection Marking, rates the degree of protection that the enclosure provides. The IP Code has two digits. The first digit is the protection from solid particles and the second digit is the protection from liquids.

Keystone Compliance
Ingress protection testing tests the level of protection an enclosure provides against intrusions. One such set of ingress protection tests is called the dripping water test. These tests are numbered IPX1 or IPX2. The first digit, represented by the “X”, ranges from 0 to 6 and specifies the protection from solid particles. The second digit, in the case of the dripping water ingress protection test, would always be either a 1 or a 2.

There are generally two types of bending tests. Three-point bend and 4-point bend. The materials that are tested using the flex test method vary from metal, plastic, wood, laminates, particle board, dry wall, ceramic tile, to glass. Bending tests vary greatly based on the product being tested.

Alpha Automation Inc.
This machine is used to test back planes used in telecommunications central stations. An operator loads a completed point to point wired back plane onto a retractable shelf on the front of the tester. Table continues and the disk falls through a hole into the bin. The shelf is pushed back into the machine where it is held in place by pneumatic operated clamps. Then a series of pneumatic cylinders sequentially insert a test card into each location in the back plane. A remote instrument performs a complete point to point continuity, short and hi pot test on all connections in the back plane.
