Rocky Mountain Laboratories, Inc.
Cross sections are prepared by mounting samples in epoxy and then grinding and polishing the mount for imaging in the optical microscope or Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Valuable information from cross sectioning can include: film thicknesses, inclusions, corrosion thickness, dimensional verification, and subsurface defects. Metallographic cross sections are typically etched to reveal the microstructure. Microstructural analysis can provide information about heat treatment history, corrosion susceptibility, as well as undesirable microconstituents.

Cygnus Instruments Ltd.
The probe (transducer) frequency required will be determined by the minimum thickness of the material to be measured. However, the lower the frequency the more effective the ultrasound will be at penetrating corrosion and coatings, if applicable.

Elcometer Limited
Premature corrosion of a substrate is usually due to a coating failure. A major cause is the presence of flaws in the finished coating. Collectively referred to as porosity, the main types of flaws are:

The LMA Signal measures loss of metallic cross-sectional area (LMA) caused by corrosion, abrasion, etc. The LMA Signal is quantitative and can be calibrated. (Typically, a rope must be retired when the LMA exceeds 10%).The WRR Signal measures wire rope roughness (WRR). WRR is defined as the aggregate surface roughness of all wires in a rope. WRR is typically caused by and indicates internal and external corrosion pitting, broken wires and clusters of broken wires. The WRR signal is quantitative, and it is calibrated together with the LMA Signal. The LF Signal can indicate localized flaws (LF), for example, broken wires, corrosion pitting, etc. Because it is only qualitative - and cannot be calibrated - it is of limited value for assessing rope deterioration and for making rope retirement decisions.

The BathyCorrometer is a diver-held unit which will measure the corrosion potential at specific contact points. Although the readings are visible to the diver, a Surface Display Unit can be supplied to verify readings on board a ship or diving platform. If Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are being used, the UCP1A contact probe or UCP1B proximity probe can be easily installed to carry out corrosion surveys. Simple surveys of marine structures can be carried out by the use of a Marine Survey Kit (see the case study on Dover Harbour Board).

CMAS probes are made from user-specified sensing materials, including carbon steels, stainless steels, and nickel-, aluminum-, and copper-based alloys. They can also be made from customer supplied materials that have the same microstructure/heat treatment as the system component materials to be monitored. The size of the sensing electrode varies from 0.1 to 3 mm (0.004" to 0.12") in diameter, depending on the application. Typical numbers of electrodes in a CMAS probe are 9, 16 or 25 for online corrosion monitoring and vary from 8 to 100 for laboratory corrosion and electrochemical studies.
