McGan Technology’s MMPD-8K electrosurgical insulation defect detector is a battery operated unit that tests the integrity, such as pinholes, cracks or defects, of the insulation of electrosurgical instrument in order to prevent inadvertent tissue burns which may occur during electrosurgical instrument procedures. The integrity of the insulation of electrosurgical instruments can occur over time, through normal surgical use, through the accidental contact with a sharp instrument or the rubbing of the insulation to the point of abrading it. The insulation failure provides an alternate pathway for the current to leave the instrument’s electrode usually beyond the sight of the surgeon which will result in the unintended tissue burn. Using an electrosurgical test equipment maintenance program can greatly reduce the number of these inadvertent burns during electrosurgical procedures.

Panasonic Automotive & Industrial Systems has launched this evaluation kit for its Grid-Eye infrared array sensor, which integrates a ”nanopower” Bluetooth Smart module and a microcontroller. The kit is intended for prototyping the Grid-EYE sensor which is a 64 pixel IR camera in a surface mount package measuring 11.6mm x 8mm x 4.3mm, which integrates the MEMS sensor, lens and I2C interface. The integrated Bluetooth module in the evaluation kit, the PAN1740, draws 4.9mA in transmit or receive operating modes, which means it can be powered by coin cell batteries. The IR sensor has 64 thermopile elements in an 8×8 grid format that detect absolute surface temperature without any contact.

The HV test hood according to Performance Level e (ISO 13849-1), developed by us according to the EN50191 standard (erection and operation of fixed and temporary electrical test installations), offers the highest safety for the operator. The large test chamber is enclosed with a hood made of sturdy, highly insulating and transparent plastic. During the test, there is a clear view of the test specimen. A signal light visually indicates safe opening when the light is “green”. “Red light” symbolises danger, the hood cannot be opened due to the safety interlock. The safety switch also ensures that the hood cannot be opened during the test. This means that the test hood fulfils all the required specifications for compulsory contact protection.

The upper limit notifies you of an unacceptably high resistance value (IE possible loss of effective dissipation) and the lower limit warns of unsafe low resistance (possible risk of electric shock from surrounding motors, live wires etc.). The unit is not switchable.
