Virtual SBC

What is a virtual session border controller or virtualized SBC? Traditionally, a session border controller (SBC) is a device positioned between carrier networks or between an enterprise LAN and a service-provider WAN. In the latter case, the border controller is called an enterprise session border controller or eSBC. Whether it is delivered as a dedicated hardware session border controller or a virtualized network function, (a.k.a. software SBC) the border controller manages call (session) setup and teardown. The SBC also provides network demarcation (demarc), or separation (border) between network domains, as well as other types of management (control) over the data streams that pass between networks. With the growing popularity of software defined networking (SDN) and the burgeoning market development and adoption of network function virtualization (NFV), eSBC functionality is more and more often de-coupled from a dedicated hardware device and delivered as a virtual instance running as a virtual machine (VM) on top of a hypervisor. It is generally not well understood in the market why an eSBC is such a critical network element for a secure and reliable SIP-based enterprise phone system. The following publication will help close that knowledge gap.

Strain Sensors

Conventional strain sensors are based on strain gage technology. In order to effectively measure the strain values in a force or load measurement application, a full, 4 element strain gage bridge circuit is utilized. The configuration is known as a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit. A Wheatstone Bridge has a very linear output in it’s midrange. That being considered +100% to -100% of range. Unfortunately, a Wheatstone Bridge becomes non-linear above the upper and lower extremes of range. Therefore, significant errors can result above the end points when attempting to take precision measurements. It is particularly important to take accurate measurements in some R&D or control applications. To avoid the mentioned error issues, PCB manufactures quartz piezoelectric strain sensors that output the same mV/microstrain sensitivity throughout the entire useful range. Thus, accuracy is improved and control requirements are enhanced that may occur at positive extremes of the measurement range. The models RHM240 and model 740B02 series sensors are the strain sensors for these applications.

Ironwood Electronics extended its high performance socket product line with smart features. Sockets are typically rated for 2K to 500K cycles. How do we know if the sockets are used for 100K or 200K insertions? Solution is electronic chip insertion counter. Our sockets can be integrated with electronics counter into the compression mechanism of the socket lid. A push button is exposed on the compression plate. Every time a chip is compressed, push button is actuated which in turn activates the electronic circuitry inside the lid. These activations are counted by the counter IC and displayed in LCD. Let’s say a contact element is rated for 2K insertions. After 2K insertions, this contact element will be replaced by new contact element. Now, the counter has to start the counting from the beginning. To achieve this function, a reset option is included in the electronics circuitry. When reset is actuated, LCD display will go to “0”.

The CS-131 is a high-precision chemical concentration monitor designed for use with SC-1 solutions used in cleaning processes during semiconductor manufacturing.
