For indirect tensile testing, such as for resilient modulus, these extensometers measure the lateral deformation of specimens. They are self-supporting on the sample and clip on in seconds. The traditional way this deformation has been measured was prone to errors caused by slight rocking of the sample as it is loaded. The self-supporting design of the Model 3911 eliminates this problem. This unit will handle the dynamic pulse requirements of resilient modulus testing.The speed of mounting makes test set-up much faster than with the older method. The pivot mounting used ensures that the specimen contact pads meet the often uneven asphalt surface as well as possible. The measuring range options available allow a wide range of testing, yet can easily measure the sometimes very small displacements required.The Model 3911 extensometers are strain gaged devices, making them compatible with any electronics designed for strain gaged transducers. Most often they are connected to a test machine controller. The signal conditioning electronics for the extensometer is typically included with the test machine controller or may often be added. In this case the extensometer is shipped with the proper connector and wiring to plug directly into the electronics. For systems lacking the required electronics, Epsilon can provide a variety of solutions, allowing the extensometer output to be connected to data acquisition boards, chart recorders or other equipment.

Strain Sensors

Conventional strain sensors are based on strain gage technology. In order to effectively measure the strain values in a force or load measurement application, a full, 4 element strain gage bridge circuit is utilized. The configuration is known as a Wheatstone Bridge Circuit. A Wheatstone Bridge has a very linear output in it’s midrange. That being considered +100% to -100% of range. Unfortunately, a Wheatstone Bridge becomes non-linear above the upper and lower extremes of range. Therefore, significant errors can result above the end points when attempting to take precision measurements. It is particularly important to take accurate measurements in some R&D or control applications. To avoid the mentioned error issues, PCB manufactures quartz piezoelectric strain sensors that output the same mV/microstrain sensitivity throughout the entire useful range. Thus, accuracy is improved and control requirements are enhanced that may occur at positive extremes of the measurement range. The models RHM240 and model 740B02 series sensors are the strain sensors for these applications.

The Keysight N7711A and N7714A tunable lasers are single-port and four-port sources, available with C-band or L-band wavelength coverage. The narrow linewidth and offset grid fine-tuning capability make them ideal sources for realistic loading of the latest transmission systems. All models can reach any wavelength point within their specified wavelength range just like all other Keysight tunable lasers. In this mode, code compatibility with existing test setups based on Keysight's range of full-size and compact tunable lasers is a great asset. In system loading applications, it may be preferable to grid-tune the lasers like system transmitters, simply by changing the channel index.
