M², or Beam Propagation Ratio, is a value that indicates how close a laser is to being a single mode TEM00 beam, which in turn determines how small a beam waist can be focused. For the perfect Gaussian TEM00 condition the M² equals 1. M² cannot be determined from a single beam profile measurement. The ISO/DIS 11146 requires that M² be calculated from a series of measurements. M² is measured on real beams by focusing the beam with a fixed position lens of known focal length, and then measuring the characteristics of the artificially created beam waist and divergence. We have a number of solutions for the measurement of M² ranging from simple manual processes to fully automated dedicated instruments, depending on the frequency of the need to measure M² of lasers and laser systems.

These high stability variable frequency optical choppers each include a set of chemically blackened photoetched chopping discs. The mini chopper is an excellent choice for applications requiring a compact package. The chopping discs come in a variety of slot apertures and allow operation. Beam diameter is limited to 0.75mm when using the 200-slot disc and 1.0mm when using the 40 slot mini disc. The easy-to-interchange blades are made of non-magnetic, half hard brass and can be used in combination. Chopping frequency is set by adjusting a ten-turn dial or by applying an external DC voltage to the BNC input. Reference output is a TTL pulse and is in-phase with chopping action. These waveguide bandwidth detectors use silicon beam lead diodes on a planar stripline circuit to obtain an extremely rugged and compact device. Most millimeter wave broadband detectors have very poor VSWR due to the difficulty in obtaining a good wideband impedance match to the diode. To overcome this problem, these detectors utilize two diodes and an internal matched termination and 3 dB hybrid as shown below. This circuit allows a VSWR of 2.0 or better over a full waveguide bandwidth for most of these detectors. Detectors for waveguides WR-8 and smaller use a single zero bias GaAs diode. The high sensitivity zero bias GaAs diodes can also be special ordered for use at lower frequencies when highest sensitivity is required.
