The Energy Absorber Test System includes power supplies and a regenerative energy absorber with a rating of 400VDC at ±150A. The system consists of DC power supplies, an AC distribution and interlock system, an energy absorber chassis and an absorber load resistor chassis. The power sources are equipped with a remote control option allowing control via GPIB or with front panel controls in local mode. The operation of the specific parts of the system is described in the sections below.

Integrated lock-in amplifier circuitry allows for synchronous detection of chopped optical signals, improving both S/N ratio and background rejection. The dual channel Rk-5720 simultaneously measures Channel A, Channel B, and the ratio B/A. The D200 is a compact, DC-coupled fast laser driver, providing up to 4 amps of regulated constant current. A built-in edge-triggered pulse generator produces up to 1 microsecond pulse widths and 2 nanosecond transition times, capable of driving lasers with forward voltages up to 9 volts. A pulse-follower mode is also provided, accommodating externally-defined trigger widths up to 100% duty continuous-wave (CW). Power, pulse width, drive current and differential triggering functions are accessible through a ribbon cable header for embedded OEM applications. A low-inductance laser drive interface permits direct laser connection or custom interposer and flex-cable attachment.
