Transformer: Two 200 KVA transformers are used to step 480 VAC to 3750 VAC each in a 12 pulse configuration Rectifiers: Two 6 pulse rectifier assemblies capable for 5000 VDC and 60 Amps output were used. The high voltage rectifier assemblies are isolated and protected in a fiberglass plenum within the enclosure. Blocking Diode: Each diode of the 6 pulse rectifier consists of 10 diodes in series to offer a blocking voltage of 12000 V (PIV)

CherryTemp is a temperature controller based on two independent Peltier channels, allowing for very accurate temperature control and ultra-fast shifts from 5°C to 45°C. A thermalization liquid circulates from a reservoir to the heat exchangers (heating/cooling Peltier elements) where it is thermalized to a target temperature. Once thermalized, this liquid can be quickly injected to a microfluidic device (CherryTemp chip) mounted near the sample. Because of the small thermal mass (the distance between the microfluidic chip and the sample), the temperature transfer is very fast (less than 10 seconds) and of unprecedented accuracy due to a feedback loop control of the room temperature and the heat-sink played by immersion objective lenses.

The 2-MGEM Optical Anisotropy Factor Measurement System is a normal-incidence polarization reflection microscope designed to measure the sample Mueller matrix and is a 2008 R&D 100 Award Winner. This system is designed specifically to evaluate the Optical Anisotropy Factor (OPTAF) of cross sections of TRISO nuclear fuel pyrocarbon layers. Other possible material characterizations include measuring Mueller matrix elements of other crystals, carbon compounds, and thin film coatings (e.g. surfacedeposition films) at normal incidence. The 2-MGEM can also measure retardation (d), circular diattenuation (CD) and the polarization factor (ß). These parameters are not measurable using older techniques, since those techniques do not incorporate a compensating optical element.
