Optical fiber consists of a core and a cladding layer, selected for total internal reflection due to the difference in the refractive index between the two. In practical fibers, the cladding is usually coated with a layer of acrylate polymer or polyimide. In 2017 ARPANSA (Australian Government’s primary authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety) began replacing the existing biometers with SiC photodiode UV sensors (sglux ERYCA) at all network sites. There are currently thirteen measurement sites in Australia that have been upgraded to the new sensors.
