The meter measures the magnitude and polarity of static charge on objects or surfaces. The sensor is calibrated for measuring a surface at 1" from the end of the sensor. On metallic or conductive surfaces, the meter measures the voltage on the surface. (As with any electrostatic voltmeter, the displayed reading depends somewhat on the size of the object being measured and the distance between the object and the sensor.) On insulating surfaces, "voltage" is not a well-defined number. In this case, the meter reads a number proportional to the static charge present.

These is considered far field measurements and the emission limits are given for the specific distance by the specification. Resistivity logging measures the subsurface electrical apparent resistivity, which is the ability to impede the flow of electric current. This helps to differentiate between formations filled with salty waters (good conductors of electricity) and those filled with hydrocarbons (poor conductors of electricity). Resistivity and porosity measurements are used to calculate water saturation. Resistivity is expressed in ohms or ohms\meter, and is frequently charted on a logarithm scale versus depth because of the large range of resistivity.
