Sample Pretreatment For Optical Emission Spectrometry

Samples are taken from molten metal, thin sheet, semi-complete or complete products. When sampling molten metal with a ladle, small quantities of molten metal are poured into a casting mold. Unnecessary parts of the sample are removed using a grinder or a cutter. As particles from a grinder may contaminate the surface of the sample, a lathe or milling machine is used (not a grinder) to cut soft samples such as white metal. If trace elements are not being investigated, a grinder or belt sander can be used. However, to minimize contamination, the grinding wheel or belt should be changed for each sample. Samples excised from semi-complete or complete products must be at least 12 mm in diameter. Small rod-shaped samples can be analyzed using special equipment.

Determination of released carbon dioxide and water is a special requirement for quality control in the cement and lime industry. ELTRA’s CW-800 analyzer is designed for the precise, simultaneous determination of carbon dioxide and water in lime, gypsum and cement from trace level up to 100 % (depending on sample weight). Other sample materials include ores, soil and minerals. The CW-800 is equipped with a resistance furnace with quartz tube for sample oxidation and can provide temperatures up to 1000 °C. The PCI104 is a PCIe carrier for PCI Mezzanine Cards (PMC) or Processor PCI Mezzanine Cards (PrPMC). The PCI104 carrier allows simplified testing of PMC/PrPMCs and their associated PMC I/O Modules (PIMs) by using a PC environment during board development or deployment. The PCI104 can also reduce the costs of manufacturing PMC/PrPMCs by allowing manufacturers to use off-the-shelf PCs for functional testing. The PCI104 converts the PCIe x4 edge connection to PCI-X via a PCIe to PCI-X bridge. The trace lengths to the PMC/PrPMCare kept to a minimum so the PMC/PrPMC can run with a133MHz PCI-X clock speed. The J4 connector of the installed PMC/PrPMC is routed to a 96-pin DIN connector per theVITA-35 specification. The PCIe to PCI-X bridge can run in either transparent or non-transparent mode and can also operate in forward or reverse mode. The PCI104 has a fan mounted on the board to cool the PMC/PrPMC. The fan can easily be removed for testing and probing of hosted card.
