  • Gavia AUV Software and Data Handling

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

The Gavia autonomous vehicle control software is implemented using a 'crewmember' paradigm. This means it is organized using a distributed architecture modeled on the division of responsibilities among the crew of a marine vessel. The Gavia Intelligent Artificial Crew (IAC) comprises a full set of modules responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel together with project modules responsible for meeting the goals of the mission. The Captain has the a set of responsibilities suitable for the role; overseeing the operation of the vessel and deciding on actions in response to exceptional or critical circumstances. With the vehicle Captain handling reaction to exceptional circumstances, the application modules are free to concentrate on the goals of the mission.

The Osprey AUV has a 324 mm diameter in order to carry additional energy allowing for extended operational endurances in excess of 24 hours (configuration dependent) while maintaining the same 1000 meter depth rating of the proven Gavia design. Added features include an efficient rim drive thruster, external data pod, increased capacity battery modules, science bay, obstacle avoidance and forward looking sonar nose, and customizable payloads.

  • Battery Module

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

Each Gavia Battery Module contains several independent "smart" Li-Ion battery packs and battery chargers. Each battery pack is monitored for health and operational information, and the battery packs are protected against short-circuit and overcharge. The Battery Module also contains an intelligent power management processor.

  • Multibeam Profiling Module

MB-2250 - Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

The BlueView 2250 multibeam profiling module, built for the Gavia AUV by Teledyne BlueView, is derived from the company’s proven 2250 kHz MBSeries sonar. Teledyne BlueView is recognized as the leading manufacturer of integrated Multibeam Profiling sonar systems for high resolution data collection.

  • Camera Option for Nosecone Module

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

The Point Grey Grasshopper digital camera provides high resolution, high sensitivity sensors, yielding optimal imaging for underwater photography. Housed in the nosecone, the camera takes photos at a rate of up to 3.5 frames per second. Images are stored on a compact flash card and can be viewed through the Gavia Control Centre.

  • GeoSwath Module

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

The GeoSwath Plus Sonar Module contains a wide-swath bathymetric sonar suitable for a range of survey and inspection tasks. The GeoSwath Plus is a 500kHz interferometric sonar, or phase detecting bathymetric sonar (PDBS) from Kongsberg GeoAcoustics. Boat-mounted GeoSwath sonars are used worldwide for high accuracy surveys including port and harbour navigation and environmental mapping: the Gavia’s GeoSwath module makes this capability available in a commercial AUV. The GeoSwath Plus offers: wide swath coverage of up to 12 times the AUV altitude when near the seabed; integrated bathymetry with simultaneous true digital side scan; high depth resolution suitable for IHO survey standards; as well as the accuracy and repeatability of a boat-mount hydrographic survey system. Like most of the survey-grade sensors on the Gavia AUV, the GeoSwath data is time-synchronised with the AUV master clock using the vehicle PPS/ZDA system. Benefits of the GeoSwath AUV module include ease of deployment, ease of use, reducing survey time, and the ability to take a 500kHz high-resolution sonar down to targets in 1000m of water. The GeoSwath Plus post-processing software (provided as standard with the system) allows a user to inspect and process the data, create and inspect digital terrain models, and create basic sonar mosaics. Several other commercial post-processing software packages are also available, please ask for details. Note that for best results the GeoSwath Module should be deployed with a direct-reading sound velocity sensor (option) in the Control Module, and one of the high-accuracy INS/DVL Navigation Modules for motion sensing.

  • Science Bay Module for Gavia AUV

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

The Gavia Science Bay Module is a generic payload module that allows a Gavia user to add up to six scientific sensors to the Gavia AUV. THE SONAR TRANSPONDER MODULE (STM), is a module for receiving and retransmitting sonar signals which allows for a standard Gavia vehicle to be configured as a Sonar Training Target (STT) for ASW training purposes. The STM consist of a flooded transducer compartment, an electronic compartment and a hydrophone that is towed behind the Gavia AUV and is capable of simulating preprogrammed target characteristics. The STM is programmable to emulate different type of realistic submarine target sizes and speeds for cost effective and re-usable ASW training capability.

  • Acoustic Modem Option for Control Module

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

Gavia AUVs can be fitted with the Teledyne Benthos ATM-900 Acoustic Modem. The ATM-900 Series Acoustic Telemetry Modem is the most advanced, multipath and noise tolerant, modem available. They are designed to meet both the high data rate requirements of commercial users, and the higher reliability, lower data rate requirements of the military. The modems employ two modulation techniques: phase shift keying (PSK), which provides the highest bit rate, and multiple frequency shift keying (MFSK), which provides reliability in a multipath environment, or when the modems are required to operate in a low signal-to-noise (SNR) environment. The ATM-910 Series can transmit data using PSK modulation for reception by a Gavia Modem Deckbox, but receives data using MFSK modulation only. MFSK modulation is a spread spectrum modulation process that transmits multiple tones simultaneously.

  • DVL-Aided INS Module

    Teledyne Marine Gavia ehf.

INS options include the Kearfott T24, the Kearfott T16 and the IxBlue ROVINS-154. These are navigation-quality INS systems which provide very accurate short-term navigation and motion sensing. They are integrated with a DVL (and GPS when surfaced) to provide a highly accurate AUV navigation solution. With the T24 INS and 600kHz DVL the navigation accuracy for the AUV going in a straight line is better than 5.5m in 6km (1hr submerged), or ~25m for the T16 (same conditions). ROVINS-154 accuracy figures are available on enquiry. The navigation accuracy is improved when running a lawnmower survey pattern, resulting in about 2m/hour navigation drift rate for the T24/600kHzDVL (conditions and survey pattern dependent).
