The comparator consists of two wheels in which nine colour glass filters are retained in each of the wheels. The colour range goes from water white through deep amber. A tube of the sample liquid is placed between the two filter wheels. The user then rotates the wheels until the filter glass closet in colour to the liquid is in place, the nearest match to the sample becomes the designation of the liquid.
