The Type NVF-2 series of handheld directional antennas are used to locate interfering signals or noise in either the 420 – 470 MHz (Type NVF-2A) or the 900 MHz ISM band or cellular telephone bands (Type NVF-2B). Both models incorporate a solid reflector positioned behind a resonated half wave driven element, both elements being mounted on a fiberglass rod with an integral pistol grip. The configuration of the reflector and driven element are such that a deep null in the signal being received will occur when the antenna is pointed in the direction of the signal being radiated. A T-pad resistive attenuator is also incorporated in the antenna mounting enclosure to aid in the direction finding process on very strong signals or when excessive reflections present multiple returns.

Integrating spheres are used especially for measuring divergent light sources such as LEDs. The light is introduced through the input port, then reflected many times by the highly reflective interior of the sphere until it illuminates the inner surface uniformly. A detector samples a small fraction of this light to measure the total power input. Ophir integrating spheres have a highly reflective diffuse white coating for measurements independent of beam size, position and divergence. The 2-MGEM Optical Anisotropy Factor Measurement System is a normal-incidence polarization reflection microscope designed to measure the sample Mueller matrix and is a 2008 R&D 100 Award Winner. This system is designed specifically to evaluate the Optical Anisotropy Factor (OPTAF) of cross sections of TRISO nuclear fuel pyrocarbon layers. Other possible material characterizations include measuring Mueller matrix elements of other crystals, carbon compounds, and thin film coatings (e.g. surfacedeposition films) at normal incidence. The 2-MGEM can also measure retardation (d), circular diattenuation (CD) and the polarization factor (ß). These parameters are not measurable using older techniques, since those techniques do not incorporate a compensating optical element.
