Sigfox is a communication protocol that is used to read data from sensors through a fixed network of base stations. It works like a low cost “SMS” service. As an end-user, you only need to buy a subscription to connect to the data network operated by SIGFOX. Sigfox employs a proprietary Ultra Narrow Band (UNB) radio technology that enables communication using the Industrial, Scientific and Medical ISM radio band, which uses 868MHz in Europe and 902MHz in the US. About the size of a home ADSL Router, a Femtocell (also known as an Access Point Base Station) is designed to allow 3G enabled devices (Phones, PDAs, Laptops) to connect to a carrier's core 3G network even where the carrier does not provide a signal themselves.
