Deep Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer System

A new ultraviolet spectrophotometer system for optical metrology just arrived at NASA Goddard! The VUVAS-10X spectrophotometer works best in the 90 to 160 nanometer wavelength range, also known as deep or vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region. It uses a windowless hydrogen plasma light source and differential pump section to reach many wavelengths beyond those of conventional deuterium lamps. The source also works with other gases, or gas mixtures, for atomic spectral line emission from about 30 nanometers (double ionized Helium gas) up to the Visible light range. The new spectrophotometer system, McPherson VUVAS-10X, uses a one-meter focal length high-resolution monochromator with the special light source, scintillated detector and Model 121 goniometric sample chamber. The system is ideal for optical transmission, absorbance and specular reflectance at incident angles up to 60 degrees. This McPherson spectrophotometer system will help develop, inspect and qualify optical materials and coatings used for very high altitude and extraterrestrial space flight missions.

The Hawk® Radius is a ruggedized solution for monitoring both ambient and elevated levels of ionizing radiation. Like a Hawk with its remarkable vision, the Hawk Radius Probe “sees” things that other probes cannot. The high sensitivity weatherized pancake sensor can provide early warning of changing ambient radiation conditions, while the energy compensated detector can accurately report penetrating gamma radiation dose rate at elevated levels. Radius probes are typically deployed as part of an environmental radiation monitoring program, or for safety and security systems. In its standard configuration the probe detects beta, low energy gamma and x-radiation with one channel and energy compensated penetrating gamma radiation levels with a second channel. It can be configured to detect alpha radiation as well. The Hawk® Radius has been deployed worldwide in demanding conditions for protecting communities and collecting environmental radiation data. It can be deployed easily and requires minimum maintenance. The Radius is compatible with Medcomʻs GeigerLink adapter and the IMI Gateway App for use with personal computers. It can also be used with most data loggers including popular Campbell Scientific models.

This is an air nozzle ionizer with a built-in ultra-compact high-voltage transformer that does not require high-voltage wiring. There are many production processes where electrostatic charges disturb smooth operation. To eliminate static, ionizers are used. One typical field of application is the semiconductor industry where the components are extremely sensitive and can even be damaged by high electric static charges. Another example is the printing industry: Here friction between the rollers and the paper generates static. The static makes the paper cling and not move correctly through the printing machine. Especially when printing on vinyl or plastics, electrostatic charges need to be removed. In the packaging industry, plastic sleeves or foils tend to stick to each other, which can be prevented with an ionizer eliminate static. A general problem in assembling processes is the adhesion of dust and dirt particles. Contamination of workpieces can be prevented by having static eliminators neutralize and blow away undesired particles.
