OWL fiber optic visual fault locators (VFL) are specially designed to couple a maximum of optical energy into multimode and singlemode optical fibers by using a bright red fiber optic laser. Breaks, microbends, and other anomalies in optical fibers and connectors cause the intense bright red laser light to escape, thus revealing the presence of a fault. In addition to visual fault location, OWL VFLs can be used as a visual optical fiber identifier. The A994 is an open circuit locator for electric and telephone cables wind on the reel; it gives the position of the fault from the inside or outside end of the cable, in percentage to the total cable length. The instrument measures the ratio of the capacitances of the two sections of failed conductor using two high precision i/v converters. The advantage of this method is due to the fact that the measurement error depends almost exclusively on the dimensional inhomogeneity of the cable. The A994 has the unique feature to permit the location of fault in cables with all broken wires. This instrument locates breaks in cables with a total capacity between 2 nF and 5 uF. The distance to fault is displayed on a large LCD display.

Using the correct frequency makes a world of difference when locating buried utilities. The depth of the utility, size, material, and amount of congestion (proximity of other utilities) all need to be taken into consideration for the correct frequency selection. Large diameter, direct buried pipes with bell housing ends that use insulators and rubber gaskets, such as water or gas require a higher frequency while smaller diameter, well-grounded direct buried or long distance in conduits work, better with a lower frequency. The VM-850 operates at a much lower frequency of 9.82kHz which is ideal for smaller diameter utilities such as CATV, power and telephone with less bleeding onto adjacent services.
