Pyrgeometers measure the long wave down welling radiation by means of a single detector facing the atmosphere. The Net longwave and down welling radiation can be determined by calculation.

The extent to which the radiation intensity increases or decreases with distance can be determined by positioning the magnetometer at various distances from the radiation source.
