The beam propagation factor M2 is a common single parameter that charac-terizes the whole beam as it propagates through space. According to ISO standard 11146, this parameter could be defined by several measurement techniques based on beam profiling along several points of the propagating beam. The standard defines several measurement techniques, all of which are based on beam profiling measurements using devices such as cam-eras, knife edge and slits. There are two main measurement requierments - 1) Measurements of focused beams. 2) Measurements of collimated beams. Our M2 devices are capable of measurements of both laser types and due to their modular design interchangeable heads can be mounted in same M2 gear.

Large Aperture Beam Profilers

Modern laser applications seldom require large beam profiling, combined with high resolution. The BeamOn HR 1" is the perfect solution enabling both relatively large beam characterization, with a high resolution detector of 20 MP. By implementing a diffuser to present the beam to a smaller detector via dedicated optics, one of the largest beam profilers of 60 mm is offered, i.e BeamOn LA U3. Even further than that, for collimated beams the Laser Analyzing Telescope offers an input aperture of 100 mm combined with high resolution, attitude and divergence measurement of the laser beam.

Tomographic knife-edge technology offers a feasible solution. Multiple knife-edges scanning from different directions provide beam profiles depen-dent on scanning angle. The M2 factor wil define the beam propagation characteristics compared to ideal Gaussian beam propagation. According to ISO Standard 11146 rightfully offers the laser beam characterization as "M2 times diffraction limited beam", as such, a perfect beam will have an M2 of 1. 1 will be the best achievable value and no beam could have an M2 less than 1. Our conceptual design is based on sub-assemblies allowing to change the sensing head in the M2 device, offering multiple wavelengths heads up to 2.7 microns from deep UV (knife-edge technology) and camera based technology with built-in automatic filter wheel for adjustment. For focused beams, the same measuring head could be attached to a device for meauring highly divergent or highly convergent beams - FocusGage-BA, wherein the Laser Analyzing Electronic Autocollimator offers the capability of divergence measurement with Coming Soon M2 definition. M2Beam is the cornerstone of those measuring devices.
