Definition:
A method of digitally transmitting data over twisted pair telephone lines, providing Internet access at rates far faster than traditional dial-up.

Two primary types of DSL exist: asymmetric DSL, where downstream speed is higher than upstream rates, and symmetric DSL where but the down and upstreams are equally fast.
