    The most common detectors for low powers are photodiodes due to their good power resolution and fast response time. Light is absorbed in the material and converted into an electrical current proportional to the radiation power. Depending on the material composition, each wavelength results in a different signal and only a narrow bandwidth of wavelengths lead to an electric signal at all, as can be seen in the chart on the right. Besides the widely available Si, Ge and InGaAs are also used as photodetectors. The absorption characteristics of those two materials extend into the NIR spectrum, up to 1800 nm. When electrically biased appropriately, InGaAs can even absorb at higher wavelengths. All available photodiodes together cover a total range of UV, VIS, and NIR.

    The model 5184 is a medium input impedance, AC-coupled, voltage preamplifier which features an ultra low-noise input stage. It has a frequency response from 0.5 Hz to 1 MHz and a fixed gain of x1000 (60 dB) and incorporates a special pseudodifferential input stage that can be floated to give the ground loop immunity normally associated with true differential inputs but without the associated noise penalty.     Phillips' OVP782 over-voltage protection module automatically disconnects source from load if an over-voltage condition occurs. The rapid response time of the OVP782 helps reduce the risk of damage to the load. AN LED indicates when a fault condition has occurred and a manual reset button must be pressed to reconnect the source to load. If the OVP782's power supply is interrupted, it defaults to the source/load disconnected condition.

    The A2T is a single axis, digital gravity angle sensor. The A2T serves as a full 360 range absolute tilt sensing programmable level with either digital or analog output. Internally, a rotary bar coded disk is mounted to a weighted gravity driven wheel. A micro-controller strobes an LED to transfer the bar code image onto an optical linear array, then decodes the position every 2 mSec. Magnetic damping provides fast response and settling time while virtually eliminating overshoot and oscillations. An internal EEPROM stores field programmable parameters such as resolution, zero position, direction swap, and mode. This second generation design virtually eliminates the primary accuracy limitation of first generation inclinometers, which is sitation (hysteresis).
