The BA8100 is designed to accurately measure the internal impedance of a single cell or battery stack with voltages as high as 80 V. In addition to impedance, auxiliary measurements include voltage, current, phase, capacitance, inductance, quality factor and more. With the provided software, the BA8100 can perform Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) across a frequency range of 50 mHz to 10 kHz. The impedance spectrum can be evaluated through the Nyquist and Bode plot tools to determine effective series resistance (ESR) and track battery health. Included with the BA8100 is a self-test fixture to verify the instrument’s performance or compensate for resistance introduced by the test leads.

For example, a fiber optic transmitter at the HV level for waveforms to be received and measured or recorded by grounded instrumentation might be powered by an isolation transformer secondary to primary either insulated by potting, oil or air. The low dielectric constant of air insulation provides lower capacitive coupling between the secondary and the primary or ground than would solid or oil insulation. The lower capacitance provides better isolation both at line frequency and especially at high frequency voltages such as lightning or switching transients.

The Model HR2 meter measures resistance in nine ranges from 1 ohm to 1.9999 Tera ohms (1.9999x1012 ohms), and conductance in a single range of 0.00 to 199.99 pS (pico siemens, or pico mhos), all at low voltage of < 2 volts across the sample. Basic accuracy is +/- 2% of reading +/- 1 count. For resistance higher than 1.9999 Tera ohms, the conductance range can be used to measure conductance down to 0.01 pS (100 T ohms). The meter has a conductance range because samples with simultaneously high resistance and high capacitance settle faster to their final value on conductance (usually under one second), than on resistance (several seconds), and conductance is also capable of detecting higher resistance than the resistance ranges can. Note that resistance in units of T ohms is the inverse of conductance in pS, so that the resistance can be calculated from the conductance. For example, 100 pS is 0.01 T ohm (10 G ohm), and the highest readable conductance of 199.99 pS is essentially 5 G ohms.
