  • Drone Payload Satellite Simulator

    AtlanTecRF has introduced a new light-weight, rugged and compact Drone Payload Satellite Simulator. The unique simulator is capable of providing a transmit (Tx) to receive (Rx) loop-back for compact and mobile satellite communications systems testing without the need for cable connections. AtlanTecRF standard high performance LTT microwave circuits, have been configured for installation along with circularly polarised Ka-Band antennas and a rechargeable battery power pack into a specially designed and weatherproof housing capable of being carried by a moderately sized hovering drone. The drone is then flown into the line of sight of the satcom system antenna providing the loop-back and facilitating system/antenna testing and calibration without the need to go live on the satellite. Test methods using other satellite simulator models can involve mounting the simulator test instrument on a mast or ‘cherry picker’ to intercept the satcom system's line of sight. But such an arrangement can give rise to test site clutter and inconvenience in some circumstances. The Drone Payload avoids this scenario and also has the advantage of being able to provide the loop-back from heights above the ground which would be simply impractical by other methods.

    The ALT series of Loop Test Translators are designed to replace the satellite link for test and alignment of earth station systems operating in S, C, X, Ku or DBS frequency bands. Incorporating fundamental frequency phase locked oscillators and double balanced mixers, the translators block convert frequencies from uplink to either downlink or L-band for instantaneous monitoring of frequency, power levels and modulation. The input path contains a front panel controlled continuously variable attenuator for reducing input power levels. Each unit also provides a reference frequency output and LO lock alarm.

Circuit design uses SMT devices including Si bipolar active devices up to 3 GHz and GaAs FET active devices above 3 GHz. The output contains a buffer amplifier for improved ruggedness, higher output power and a wider range of load VSWR. DRO types have an external tuning screw for factory set up only.

    Satellite Simulator Payload Suitable for Drones/UAVs and High Altitude Platforms. Ku-Band Drone Satellite Simulator specifically designed to enable the testing of ocean going satcom systems. The miniaturised satellite simulator was flown on a eight blade drone and in the tests the Ku unit received a signal while hovering above a ground terminal similar to the type that would be used on ocean going liners and large cargo ships. The Drone Satellite Simulator then transposed that signal and sent it back at downlink frequencies thereby simulating the satellite and allowing the testing of the ship's antenna without the ship having to alter its course.
