Check on 6 and 12V systems. To indicate whether there is an electrical potential at any low voltage point in the system. By using the pointed contact tip to pierce insulation on cables, it will also indicate if current is present. This can be helpful when tracing faults or add cable to a circuit.

A DC voltmeter measures the current passing between two points. The normal use of a voltmeter is to check the power in an electrical circuit. Manufacturers install some voltmeters permanently in equipment, but in testing equipment, the voltmeter is generally portable, allowing the user to test different circuits.

Mess- & Prüfsysteme GmbH
Partial discharge (PD) is a local electrical discharge that occurs in imperfections or inhomogeneities. The partial discharge measurement is a so-called “non destructive test” to determine the quality of insulating materials. On the contrary of pure high-voltage test, th test item is not pre-damaged at low PD levels.

Testing for electrochemical migration (ECM) would occur in the case of a field failure return. Metal migration between isolated conductors on a completed printed circuit assembly may produce electrical shorts. Why does this growth occur and what do you need to look for? Basically, we need to know if our assemblies are “dirty.” By dirty, we mean littered with ions. Ions on printed circuit assembly surfaces can cause short circuits. In simple terms, shorts occur when the space between the conductors is bridged by dendrites formed by re-deposited metal ions. This metal migration is best described by IPC as a reverse plating of the conductors in the presence of ions, water and an electrical potential.
