The optical power density of fiber optic ASE sources is typically higher than that of fiber-coupled broadband semiconductor light sources with simultaneously lower intensity noise (RIN). These properties, and the lack of resonator interference, of good incoherence make ASE sources a preferred instrument for use in metrology applications.
