CTDs: Profiling

Profiling CTDs make continuous measurements as they travel through water. When lowered over the side of a ship or integrated with an autonomous vehicle, they map a vertical column of water's characteristics. Compared to moored CTDs, profiling CTDs account for dynamic errors introduced by moving through water and sample rapidly to generate a high-resolution dataset over a short period of time. The 1 kW and 2 kW laser furnace for single crystal fabrication is based on a design and developed in close cooperation with the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science under the leadership of Yoshio Kaneko. Both melting zones have 5 lasers each, which guarantees a high uniformity of power density in the melting zone range. The laser profile has been optimized to reduce thermal stress during the crystal growth process. In addition, the system includes an integrated temperature sensor for real-time temperature monitoring. Temperatures up to 3000 °C can be reached and therefore materials with a very high vapor pressure, a narrow temperature range of the melt, a high thermal conductivity coefficient and incongruent melts can be melted.

The Kratos Ar Gas Cluster Ion Source (GCIS) is optimised for depth profiling organic materials in Arn+ cluster mode and inorganic materials in Ar+ monomer mode, dependent on the operating parameters defined by the user and the type of material to be profiled. In Arn+ ion cluster mode the ions can be accelerated up to a maximum of 20 keV. This enables the successful sputter depth profiling of the widest range of polymer materials to be undertaken. However, Arn+ cluster depth profiling has been shown to give very low sputter yields for inorganic materials. In order to retain the capability of generating depth profiles from this class of materials this ion source can also be operated in the more conventional Ar monomer (Ar+) mode.
