In a peer to peer conflict, weapon location radars used for counter battery purposes will be extremely vulnerable.With aerial/satellite based surveillance available for the opponent, radars will be seen. With electronic warfare means being omnipresent, radars will be triangulated and jammed. There is an urgent need for 24/7 persistent surveillance with (preferably) passive sensors. With mobility being the key for survival on the battlefield, rapid re-deployable, or even truly mobile sensor capabilities are required. Therefore, the traditional sheer sound pressure based sound ranging capability becomes obsolete, as the triangular footprint of the sensor nodes is too large to be installed on a manned, or unmanned platform. With the trend towards longer ranges and “shoot and scoot” drills, the concept of capturing the muzzle blast noise becomes questionable, as the speed of sound is too slow to provide timely localizations.

The global community is often asked to send in observers trying to maintain the peace and to report on violations from both sides. There is a need for well described events in the formal reporting, when, where, what kind of weapon etc.

Static kind of infrastructure is often vulnerable to attacks by either small arms fire (SAF) or mortars. The objects could be for instance a military forward operating base, an embassy or a post from the United Nations. As attacks may occur all the time, persistent and affordable protection is required. Especially when inhibited by civilians, ease of operations use and maintenance become more important. Often installed in remote places far away from the electricity grid, power consumption is an issue.

In peace time, for training purposes, artillery units conduct their frequent target practicing.Both the skills of the gunners and the forward observers need to be improved, their communication cycle to be shortened.Forward observing is a dangerous task during war time, causing a justification to find other ways to localize impacts and adjust fires.Furthermore, the sheer lack of a line of sight, because of topography and/or weather, also thrives the need for other solutions to determine the impact coordinates.

Incoming direct fire poses a threat to the vehicle and, when manned, to its crew. Traditional acoustic systems to detect and localize incoming Small Arms Fire do not work when the vehicle is driving, which is in essence the key to survive on the battlefield in the first place.
